Relatives help us to take the first small steps. We acquire skills necessary for our live. Also family is responsible for quick and proper physical and mental development of a child. It’s a fact, that kids who have grown up , develop slower and often have problems at every turn and twist of their future life.

Secondly family is the most important force that assumes responsibility for character formation. Every family has a set of values that determines our behavior, gives expression to beliefs and gives meaning to our everyday life. Moreover we all inherit some qualities from our relatives. Whatever, we learn from our family over the years. They teach us the value of love, affection and care. Family determines to a large extent the social the social roles that children will perform.

Belonging to a family is highly important to each of us. Our family gives us the sense of tradition, strength and purpose. Our families show us who we are. The things we need most of all — love, respect, and communication – have the beginning in the family.

Family is very important in our lives. Family is an emotional center of people"s life. You can always find help and support in your family. If you have any problems, you can consult your parents or relatives. You feel secure when there’s a family behind you. In happy families, parents are frank and honest with their children, they treat their children with respect without moralizing or bossing them.

The functions of the family.

Families serve many functions:

• They provide conditions in which children are born and brought up.
• They educate children, teach them family values and daily skills.
• They give us emotional support and security.

Family patterns.

When we speak about family patterns we mean traditional and non-traditional families , but we must admit that family patterns vary from country to country.

When we speak about a traditional family, we mean a family with both parents living together. Usually there are two children in a traditional family. Today there is a tendency that families are getting smaller. Therefore, a family where there is only one child can also be called a traditional one.

In a traditional family the father goes out and works and the mother looks after the children, or both parents work. More and more women work today either to express themselves or to earn money to support the family.

Today there are many single-parent families, which are headed by only one parent, usually the mother. Many divorced men are required to help support the children by law.

Family problems.

Families today face many difficulties – for example financial difficulties – low-income families are not rare today. It’s a problem because children in families, which suffer from poverty, are likely to commit a crime one day.

Another family problem is connected with the relationship between the parents. More than a half of all marriages in well-developed countries end in divorce. Children suffer greatly during a divorce, but it’s better to live in a single-parent family, than with two parents who are unhappy.

Generation gap is also a problem in many families. Teenagers often consider their parents old-fashioned. And parents don’t want to understand their children’s needs. Our parents sometimes don"t want to understand modern views, ideals and our system of values. They say that teenagers are cruel, brutal, heartless and rude. Sometimes when we talk to our parents, they listen only to their own point of view. They say that wisdom always comes with age and that they know better.

Do you have your own family traditions?

There are some family traditions in my family. For example, we always have dinner together. Every evening, when my parents come home from work, we have a family dinner. We discuss the important events of the day.

The second tradition is connected with household duties. Everyone in our family has his own duties. For example, my mum is responsible for cooking, while my dad always does the shopping. I’m responsible for the pets and plants, while my older sister is responsible for washing the dishes and vacuum-cleaning.

The third tradition is celebrating holidays together. We especially like celebrating New Year and Christmas. The traditional New Year dishes in our home are a roast chicken, a couple of salads and my mum’s specialty — a vanilla cake. We always prepare postcards and presents for one another.

I have a big lovely family. Well, let me introduce myself to you. My name is Alina. I am 12 years old. Besides me, there are two more children in our family. My older brother’s name is Igor; my younger sister’s name is Lena.

Igor is twenty-four. He works as an engineer for a small company. He graduated from university two years ago. It is very good to have an elder brother. As a rule, he helps Lena and me to do our homework. Lena is ten years old. She says her dream is to become a doctor in the future. However, nobody knows that I like this idea.

Also, we have a big pet. It is a dog. We like to look after it. Its name is Mushket and it is my favourite one. I like playing and having fun with my favourite pet. Sometimes, I have to play with my sister too. But, unfortunately, she is too small to share secrets with.

My parents are not strict. My Daddy is over fifty and he works as a driver. He is a very kind man. My Mummy is nearly fifty. I am proud of the fact that she works in the local library. She has been a librarian for a lot of years. My mum knows plenty of interesting stories.

As well as me, my mother has parents. It means I have grandparents. My grandfather and grandmother used to work at school as teachers. Now, they are retired and live in a village. My sister and I like swimming, so on Saturdays we usually go to swimming pool. At weekends my family always goes shopping. We usually buy food and some nice toys for Lena and me. The family is very important as a unit in our society. Nothing else but family can be an emotional center of people"s life, can be a transmitter of culture and raising children. Every mother feels great affection for her children and tries to bring them up in a proper way. Understanding between the members of the family and consideration for others are very important in family relationship. Tenderness, warm-heartedness and respect must always be present in the family to make it friendly. A lot of activities help members of the family to be on friendly terms: discussing all the family plans together, going on trips hikes together, visiting museums, theaters, exhibitions and exchanging opinions about them, sharing the same joys and sorrows. Some people think that parents should be patient, kind and understanding. The rules and children"s behaviors are discussed in such families. But others believe that children ought always to obey the parents and if they won"t they should be punished. From my point of view, such principles won"t do a lot of good. Fear and punishment will lead to selfishness, cruelty and lies. But "love and kindness will save the world". We are the family of two. I live with my mother. We don"t have such problems as misunderstanding between the members of the family. I think that it is due to the age of my parents and their character. My mother is 40 years old, she is layer. She is a kind, clever and responsible woman. My mother always ready to give me necessary information, moral support and a good advice. It is common knowledge that there is no place like a home. We have 2 rooms, a kitchen and a bathroom. When you drop into our flat you come into a lobby, where you can take off your coat, shoes and hat. I"m very happy to have a room for myself, where I feel quite and comfortable. It is a place where I can relax, read a book and listen to music. There are yellow blinds and a writing table, a sofa, a bookcase where my favorite books are situated. There are a lot of things in my room which can tell about myself, about my friends and relatives. You can find frames with photos of my parents and best friends on the walls, little pictures. They remind me happy moments of my life and that is why are very dear for me. You may be surprised, but the most popular and favorite place with all of us is the kitchen. Every Sunday my mother makes a cake and we gather together, discuss our problems and make plans for the next week.
